English 4 Lesson 60

This is what I would like to see in a friend. Listen attentively to your friends, don’t ignore or talk over them. You should always be open to doing what you friends want to do, but your friends should also be open to doing what you want to do. When possible choose an activity you both like. Its okay to like and do other things. You don’t have to be the exact same person. A friend should not keep many secrets from their friend, but is okay to keep a few secrets. That is what I like to see in my friends.

4 Inventions I Learned About This Week

Back in ancient Greek and Roman times children were educated by tutors who they could fire if they didn’t like how they were teaching. After the collapse of the roman empire and even a little before that the church had little schools to train bishops. The church and the state argued over whether the bishop was a church office or a civil office. The pope of Rome stripped the power to appoint bishops from the emperor and made a bureaucracy. Suddenly there was to many positions and not enough people to fill them. So universities were made to make more church people. The universities also protected teachers from the free market.

People have been making wine for a very long time by walking on them. This was very dangerous because of the rising carbon dioxide released by the grapes. People often suffocated when treading on grapes. This is how most Romans did it. The poor Romans did it themselves and the rich Romans had their slaves do it. The monks made the wine press to make wine with less of a chance of killing people. The wine press makes far more wine than treading and farmers realized this and brought their grapes to the monks to use the wine press.

Romans copied and renovated ancient Greek style architecture with pillars and domes but when Rome fell that architecture faded away. It was replaced by the Gothic style without pillars and domes but it was heavier and thicker than the Roman architecture. The ribbed vault alowed for higher walls and more windows.

Europe was pretty warm before the little ice age and the growing season was about 3 weeks longer. All the farmers got together and made towns and manors to sleep in. before the little ice age the manors had large fires in the center of the room and holes in the ceiling for the smoke to go out. During the little ice age all the cold air would go in. so the people made chimneys to keep the hot air I and the cold air out.

Science 4 Lesson 53

Swans are classified in the Anseriformes order and the Anatidae family of birds. There are three species of swans in North America the Trumpeter Swan, the Tundra Swan, and the Mute Swan. Kid swans are called cygnets.

The Trumpeter swan weighs 30 pounds and is 5.5 feet long. Their wingspan can be over 8 feet long.

There are two types of tundra swans, the Bewick’s swan and Whistling swan. They are both small swans at about 5 feet, 21 pounds, and a 7 foot wingspan.

Mute swans are slightly smaller than trumpeter swans. They have a 8 foot wingspan.

Science 4 Lesson 52

Canada geese (not Canadian geese, just Canada geese) can be 3 1/2 feet tall and ganders can weigh up to 14 pounds. Male Canada geese are called ganders, females are gooses (not geese) and geese children are called goslings. They fly in a V formation to save energy. The goose in front faces the most wind resistance and the two in back face the least. Canada geese have a 4-6 foot wingspan.

Science 4 Lesson 51

Ducks are classified in the Anseriformes bird order. The word duck means “diver”. Mallard ducks are also known as Dabbling ducks because of how they eat. Male mallards are called drakes (in the picture above) and females are ducks (in the picture below), but I thought they were both ducks.

Mallards have a 32-39 inch wingspan, weigh about 3 pounds and is 20-26 inches long. Females lay around 8-13 eggs. Amazingly baby ducklings can swim right after they hatch! Human baby’s take about a year to walk.

Islamic Scientists

Al Kindi went to school in Baghdad and became a scholar and a teacher at the house of wisdom. He was one of the first great systemizers. He read lots of books and wrote lots of books. He learned about lots of different topics. Al Kindi discovered frequency analyses, which is were you decode messages. Al Kindi also had to advertise frequency analyses to the patrons (buyers) who bought their services. He did this by writing books about the benefits of frequency analyses.

Al Khwarizmi was a teacher at the house of wisdom in Baghdad. He discovered algebra and is considered the father of algebra. He marketed algebra by writing books about it for business people. One reason algebra was so successful is because it was so much better than the type of math before it.

Al Razi was a student at the house of wisdom. He became a doctor at a hospital there. Once he was a little famous he was invited to be the head of the hospital in his home town. He got even more famous there and was invited back to Baghdad to be the head doctor there. He discovered smallpox and that it was different than measles. He would treat poor patients without demanding pay. He criticized Galen which was very rare. Galen was the master physician and he was impeccable. That is not so now.

During this time there were two theories about eyesight, Plato’s and Aristotle’s theories. Pluto’s was that light is made inside the eyeball, thrown out of the eyeball strike an object and make an image of that object in our minds. Aristotle’s was that the entire form of an object enters our eye. Al Hazen rejected Plato’s theorie but made a different version of Aristotle’s theorie. His theorie was that multiple rays of light enter our eye. Al Hazen wrote over 200 books in his lifetime.

English 4 Lesson 50

This is what my family would do if a ferocious lion barged into our house. My dad would wake up my mother, grab the gun and shoot the lion if it tried to tear one of us apart. My mom would get her phone, maybe take a picture for this essay, call animal control, and race out of the house. My terrified dog would whimper and attempt to hide from the lion. I would try and get myself and my dog outside of the house. That’s what my family would do if a lion came into our house.

Science 4 Lesson 48

Barn owls are the most common owl in the world. Barn owls are a brownish tan color and have a large heart shaped face. Barn owls hiss and cluck when they think they are in danger. Barn owls have one ear higher up than the other which I think is weird. They also have really long talons and legs to capture rodents in tall grass.

Science 4 Lesson 47

Snowy owls are true owls which are part of the Strigidae family. Male snowy owls are completely or mostly plain white like the one in the picture above. Female snowy owls are white with a ton of dark spots all over them like in the picture below. But here’s the thing, young snowy owls also have a lot of dark spots so it’s kind of hard to tell if it’s a female or if it’s young.

Snowy owls are some of the largest owls since they can weigh over 6 pounds, have a 5 foot wingspan, and be close to 2 and 1/2 feet long. Snowy owls live in the Arctic but some of them migrate south in the winter. Snowy owls can go up to 40 days without food!

Science 4 Lesson 46

Owls are nocturnal birds of prey or birds that hunt at night. Owls are in the Strigiformes bird order which only has 2 family’s the true owls and the barn owls but I thought barn owls were a specific type of owl. Owls have binocular vision which means they have their eyes on the front of their head.

Owls fly almost silently because their fluffy feathers mute any sound they make. Great horned owls can grow to be 25 inches long and have a 5 foot wingspan. Captive owls can live to be 30 years old. Great horned owls do not make their nests but take already made ones.
