Science 4 Lesson 28

Tarantulas are in the Theraphosidae family. There are about 900 species of tarantula that we know of. The biggest spider that we know of is the Goliath Birdeater which is a tarantula.

Goliath Birdeaters rarely eat birds. They also have a 15-30 year lifespan. Lots of tarantulas can shoot hairs off their body and live in burrows.

Science 4 Lesson 27

The black widow spider is one of the most venomous spiders in the world but you shouldn’t be worried about it biting you unless you pinch it. Then you die. Just kidding!…maybe.

As you can see not all black widows have a perfect hourglass shape on the bottom of their abdomen but that doesn’t mean it’s not still a black widow.

The black widow spider is part of the Theridiidae family which is quite different from the jumping or trapdoor spider.

Science 4 lesson 26

Jumping spiders are known jump 50 times there body length. They also have eight eyes whereas some spiders have two or zero. The eyes themselves do not move like ours but the retinas inside the eyes do.

The spiders thorax and head are fused together but the thorax can bend easily for spinning webs easily.

Trapdoor spiders hide in little holes with they’re front legs sticking out to feel the vibrations of a potential prey. They make hinged doors by sticking dirt together with web.

Some Simple Machines That Make Life Easier

A few simple machines that make life easier are the screw, the pulley, and the inclined plane.

The screw makes life easier by letting people screw electronics together and not hammering a nail into your computer or other electronics. The screw also lets people screw boards, pieces of metal, and other materials together without the chance of hitting their fingers.

The pulley makes life easier by letting you lift a load up easier by cutting the work that you do in half. But the more rope and pulleys you have, you have to work less to do the same thing by using mechanical advantage.

The inclined plane makes life easier by being a door stopper so you don’t have to open the door each time you go through a doorway. Or it could be a ramp that makes it easier to load things into cars or anything that is raised up higher than you and your load by using mechanical advantage.

Science 4 Lesson 23

Dragonflies are in the Odonata order of insects. Adult dragonflies can eat hundreds of mosquitoes every day. There are about 3,000 species of dragonfly.

Dragonfly wings have a darker spot on them that is heavier than the rest of the wing so they can fly better.

Some dragonflies fly thousands of miles from the northern U.S. to Mexico, like the one in the picture.

Dragonfly wings move differently then other insects. Dragonflies use direct flight which is where the muscles pull directly on the wing. Other insects use indirect flight which is where the muscles pull on the body wall of the thorax.

Science 4 Lesson 21

Maggots are baby flies which I didn’t know until recently and they are very gross and will eat literally anything dead or smelly.

Then the maggot turns into a pupa that looks like something they ate while still a maggot-poop.

The “poopa” then hatches into a housefly, not to be confused with a horsefly.Very different. The housefly does not have a stinger or a bite. They do spit out digestive liquids onto the food the land on, so swipe that fly away as fast as you can to save your food.

The Inventions I learned About This Week

The gear is an invention that is a fundamental building block for modern inventions. One inventor in Greece was Archimedes who tinkered with gears a lot. One of his inventions we found in a ship wreak was designed to show the celestial movements which they depended on to keep track of time since they had no clocks. The gear is a circle with teeth on it.

The water wheel is an invention that wasn’t in use until Rome collapsed because they had slaves to do that work. The small communities had no slaves so they had to use labor saving inventions so that they could better use their time. The primitive water wheel had bowl like ends on them.

Both china and Greece had the crank but neither of them figured out how to use it backwards. It was a roman,we dont know which roman but a roman decided to use a water wheel or some circular moving thing to operate a saw or to move a toys arms up and down.

Cams are little teeth That often go onto water wheels to hit things. The christian monks used the cams to hit a hammer that smashed the ingredients for their beer every round trip. This is called the trip hammer

English 4 Lesson 20

My room would look a lot different if I could design it. My room would be made out of golden Lego bricks. It would be really cool to have Lego light bulbs, Lego doors, Lego windows, and Lego walls! It wouldn’t be very cool to have a Lego bed, Lego clothes, and Lego floors. In order to avoid the obvious problems with a Lego floor I would use flat, smooth Lego bricks. I would have all my Lego sets and minifigures set up everywhere. I would also have Lego Christmas lights set up around my room. That is what my room would look like if I could design it.

Science 4 Lesson 18

Termites have a clear way of differentiating soldiers and workers. Soldier termites have a red shell around the head. The workers have the pale heads.

The termite’s home is very intricate. In Africa the hot sun makes many animals go underground. With so many animals breathing underground it gets hot with less oxygen so the termites build tall mounds. The tall mounds have a hole in the bottom to let up hot air. The towers have pores to let in the breeze which is cool. Then the wind blowing around the tower pulls the hot air out the other side.

This is a termite queen. Some queens can lay 164,250,000 eggs in their lifetime. Queens keep the same mate for their whole life which is about 15 years.

Science 4 Lesson 17

Bees, like most insects, start out as eggs that are white and pretty long.

The larva is like the egg but is larger and has wrinkles.

Then the larva turns into a pupa which also is white like the previous stages.

Then the pupa turns into the bee itself.
